Well we know well enough how it happens too much throat and nasal tissue, or “floppy” tissue that is more prone to vibrate, and that looseness is affected by alcohol, overweight, ageing and so on, but why is mankind afflicted by it at all? It sure is a nuisance.
Well many animals snore especially dogs, children often snore but not very loudly. People living on their own may never know they snore but may of course wonder why they wake up feeling exhausted. No snoring only seems to become a problem for couples living together both get disturbed sleep, the snorer being exhausted by the physical effort and the suffering partner exhausted by the disturbed sleep and the general irritation.
A major reason we snore is that we lie down to sleep and gravity now works in the wrong direction. All we can do is minimize the risk of snoring the most effective way is to lose weight then you will lose the loose flesh whose vibration causes the worst type of snoring. Or we can use mechanical methods such as straps to prevent us breathing by the mouth, nasal breathing will rarely cause any problems. You can also encourage nasal breathing by using straps to widen the nostrils or take medication to keep the nasal passages decongested. There are mouth guards which slightly display the jaws to help keep the air passage open these are not expensive so if they don’t work it is not a disaster.
When none of these work and going up the expense scale you can try CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure, is a treatment that uses mild air pressure to keep your airways open while you sleep. This works brilliantly for many but as usual not for others.
The last resort is surgery to remove the excess loose flesh , I have read that there is a risk of painful side effects.
So to conclude there is no one reason why people snore and because of that no single cure you have to find out what type of snorer you are and then find the correct solution. But if you are overweight start on that first.
